Beautiful Birds of Colombia

Get ready to embark on an exhilarating adventure in Colombia, the ultimate paradise for bird lovers! With more bird species than any other country, this specially crafted tour promises countless breathtaking photographic moments to capture Colombia’s most dazzling avian wonders.

Bird photography in Colombia is an absolute must-do! As the ‘birdiest’ country on the planet, Colombia boasts over 1,900 registered species, including 80 endemics. That’s a whopping 20% of the world’s bird species, all waiting to be discovered with your camera.

With its astounding 1,900 species, Colombia reigns as the most bird-rich nation on earth, making it a top-notch destination for any bird photography workshop and tour. Our thrilling journey kicks off in the Western Andes, where the feeders at our lodges and private reserves attract a stunning array of photogenic tanagers, barbets, and hummingbirds, including numerous endemics and rare species. In the lush surrounding forests, we’ll aim our lenses at quetzals, woodpeckers, motmots, and toucans.

The San Antonio Cloud Forest is your perfect gateway to bird photography in the Colombian Andes. Just an hour away from this bird-rich haven, you’ll find some of Colombia’s finest bird feeder setups, each offering unique perches and an incredible variety of birds. For those who love capturing nature in its purest form, the western Andes boasts beautifully preserved habitats. At these feeder sites, we’ll focus on species like the endemic Multicolored Tanager and Colombian Chachalaca, as well as near-endemics such as Scrub, Flame-rumped, Golden-naped, Saffron-crowned, and Rufous-throated tanagers. And for hummingbird enthusiasts, over 20 species await, including the Blue-headed Sapphire, Purple-throated Woodstar, Long-billed Starthroat, Long-tailed Sylph, Booted Rackettail, and Black-throated Mango.

Our adventure then ascends to the majestic central Andean range, where the world-famous Rio Blanco and Tinamu Reserves near Manizales offer incredible opportunities to photograph Antpittas, tanagers, and hummingbirds at the feeders, alongside a myriad of cloud forest and montane birds. As we climb higher, relax in hot springs with stunning views of the Central Andes, and seek out species adapted to the high elevations of Los Nevados National Park, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Nevado del Ruiz.

We then head to Jardin to the world’s best photography set up at an Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek, where it is common to have more than 10 individuals posing for the cameras. The tour ends with a day in Bogota, photographing more than ten species of hummingbirds at the very famous Observatorio de Colibris.
