The Falkland Islands are a wildlife photographer's dream come true. The islands are one of the last untouched wildlife wonders of the world. Unspoiled beaches, rolling tussac fields and cliffs provide a natural safe-haven for hundreds of species that have made the Falklands their home. Watch albatross soar gracefully through the air against a backdrop of beautiful blue sea and sky, elephant seals sparring on the beach, the tiny Cobb's wren hopping along the shoreline, killer whales circling offshore in pursuit of a meal or sit patiently alongside king penguins and wait for the fluffy chicks to come and take a look at you! The possibilities for enjoying the wildlife experience are endless, as are the photographic opportunities. WORKSHOP OVERVIEW: 

This workshop has been designed to maximize our photography opportunities to shoot as many species as possible that the Falklands has to offer. We will be photographing on five different islands on these workshops! The trip will allow for opportunities to photograph newborn penguins as well as possibly Orcas hunting close to shore for Sea Lion pups. The trip will also be spectacular for chick and parent interaction at the penguin and albatross colonies that we will be visiting. At many destinations around the Islands, visitors will find themselves alone in a rookery, on the hillside or by a waters-edge, able to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells as a very personal encounter. The birds here not bothered by human presence and will often come right up to you out of curiosity!  Check out this impressive list of species we will encounter:Penguins: King, Gentoo, Magellanic, Rockhopper Seabirds:  Black-browed Albatross,Falkland Skua, Imperial Cormorant,Kelp Gull, Rock Cormorant, Sooty Shearwater, South American Tern, Southern Giant Petrel. Waterbirds: Falklands steamer Duck (endemic), Black-necked Swan, Chiloe Wigeon, Cinammon Teal, Crested Duck, Ruddy-headed Goose, Kelp Goose,  Silver Teal, Silvery Grebe, White-tufted Grebe Upland Goose and Yellow-billed Pintail. Shorebirds: Blackish Oystercatcher, Magellanic Oystercatcher, Magellanic Snipe, Rufous-chested Dotterel, Snowy Sheathbill, Two-banded Plover and white-rumped Sandpiper. Land Birds: Cobb's Wren (endemic), Falkland Pipit, Peregrine Falcon, Short-eared Owl, Southern Caracara, Striated Caracara,Tussac Bird, Variable Hawk and the Long-tailed Meadowlark.

Useful Information:

Medical services The Falklands have an excellent health system,with a 28-bed hospital located in Stanley providing access to doctors, surgeons, radiologists, dentists,pharmacists. Tourists are required to pay for all medical services received while in the Islands.Land-based visitors All international land-based visitors to the Falkland Islands must:

  • Possess a current passport, valid for the length of intended stay.

  • Possess a return ticket (air or boat), and evidence of accommodation and sufficient personal funds.•

  • Possess proof of valid travel insurance, inclusive of evacuation by plane.

  • Pay for any medical services received whilst in the Falklands.

  • Pay a £22 departure tax at the time of departure from Mount Pleasant International Airport, payable only in cash in £FK, £GB, euros or $US.

  • There are currently no vaccination requirements to enter the Falkland Islands.Communications (web & phone)There are several Internet cafes located around Stanley. The local telecommunications provider (Cable & Wireless) offer international mobile/cellphone roaming services for a selection of UK phone companies, as well as SIM cards for short-term use. Public phone boxes, to be used with pre-paid cards, are also scattered around Stanley. Unfortunately international calling cards cannot be used in the Falklands.Currency The local currency is the Falkland Islands pound (£FK), which has the same value as the British pound (also acceptable as legal tender throughout the Falklands). Many shops, hotels and restaurants in Stanley will also accept US dollars and euros in cash. Confrm your payment method before purchase.Electricity  The electrical current in the Falklands is 220/240 volts, 50Hz. Standard British appliance plugs will work in the Falklands, but if you’re visiting from another country be sure to bring the relevant adaptor for your appliances. International adaptors can be purchased locally at selected retail outlets.Clothing requirements:  Average daytime temperature is 45 - 55 degrees farenheit. Dress in layers. Long sleeve shirts, sweaters and long pants. Windbreaking outer wear is essential. It is very windy most days in the Falklands. Waterproof hiking and/or knee nboots are the norm for footewear.Equipment requirements: Super long prime lenses will not be essential for this trip. Most, if not all, of the photographic situations can be covered with lenses in the 17mm to 400mm range. Bring a wide angle, a 300 or 400 and a t.c. and that should do it.
